The House Dust Mite

What factors cause the presence of house dust mites?

There are three main factors which the dust mites need in order to successfully survive.

1)      FOOD - Skin Flakes  - Can be found all around our homes but high concentrations are found in bedrooms.

2)      TEMPERATURE- They thrive in temperatures of more than 20 degrees centigrade.

3)      HUMIDITY – Approximately 60 – 80% .

The House dust mite is invisible to the human eye, which is probably just as well as it is very much at home living with us, after all who can blame them we provide them with free food and board!!

The female can lay up to 100 eggs and each mite can live for between 60 - 120 days and they have no natural enemies

The dust mite can be found all around the home in soft furnishings, soft toys, carpets etc but the favourite breeding ground is the bed mattress and bedding.

Up to 2 million can be found in a double mattress, as of course it meets all their breeding requirements. With food being plentiful, ideal temperature and humidity, if you consider that in one night you can lose up to one pint of sweat and body fats!

As we know the majority of us will have dust mites in our home and in our mattresses. Many of you may already be taking precautions and trying to avoid contact with them, but are your efforts working, or are you wasting your time and money
